Best Vegetables for Small Spaces & Balcony Gardens

Lets face it, London properties often lack outside space with many people having a small terrace or balcony. We should all be doing our bit to reduce food waste and with huge price rises in the shops for every day produce why not save money and try growing some at home. There are many vegetables that are ideal growing in small spaces. Tomatoes and peppers are, without a doubt, the first ones you need to consider as they are the easiest to grow.
Here are few more suggestions suitable for the most inexperienced gardeners. Have a go and enjoy the results there is something so satisfying about eating home grown produce. Its also a great excuse to get out in the fine weather.
1. Climbing Varieties – Use containers to plant vegetables like beans, cucumbers, peas, and as they all grow vertically and take little space. They love sunny areas and just require lots of watering.

2. Salads - In small pots, you can grow leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, mustard green, chard, and some exotic ones like Chinese cabbage, fenugreek, and bok-choy. Salad is often bought and thrown away as it has limited shelf life. Its great to be able to pick and eat the veg you use as needed and reduce food waste. Tomatoes are also a fantastic and easy fruit or salad to grow with so many varieties from cherry to beef tomatoes you can make a variety.

3. Vegetable - Hardier veg can easily been as well as some easy root vegetables like radish, beets, carrots, ginger, and potato

4. Herbs - While growing vegetables on the balcony, plant some companion herbs with them. Go with the commonly used herbs—parsley, chives, cilantro, mint, rosemary, or basil. Their combination enhances the taste of vegetables, and you will also get a fresh supply of herbs.

5. And finally - When it comes to easy edibles that don't take space— you can't miss green onions and garlic greens great for salads, soups, stews, omelets and noodle dishes.
