Change can be difficult to navigate
Although the arrival of a new season is something we expect, it's still a shift. Any kind of change can be tough to handle. Along with change comes unpredictability, which can be overwhelming for both your mind and body.
Physical shifts
The drop in temperature and reduced sunlight can impact your mood. It's believed that shorter winter days and less daylight can throw off your body's internal clock. This disruption can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep. When your sleep is affected, it can also take a toll on your overall health and emotional well-being.
The transition between seasons can be challenging for many. Shorter days and cooler temperatures can have an impact on your mood and well-being. If you struggle during the colder months, here are some ways to try and support your mental health.
Establish and maintain a routine whenever possible
As changes increase, sticking to a consistent schedule becomes even more crucial. Having certain predictable elements in your day can bring a sense of stability and help you regain a feeling of control.
1.Set and keep to a schedule as much as possible
Scheduling activities that bring you joy, foster connections with others, and provide a sense of accomplishment can significantly improve your mood.
2.Be Pro active
Take control of your experience to either prevent things from worsening or to avoid them altogether. Be pro active with your exercise and nutrition by carving out time for physical activity and eating well.
Exercise is proven to alleviate symptoms of depression, and it doesn't have to involve an intense workout. A simple walk around the block can make a difference.
If you're unsure about what might improve your mood and mental health, journaling can be a helpful tool (whether on paper or through an app).
By journaling, you can identify patterns that show what lifts your spirits and what drags you down. This insight allows you to plan ahead, ensuring you engage in activities that bring you joy, while minimizing those that negatively impact your mood.
3.Be Kind to Yourself
It's natural to feel a shift in mood when life changes, but how we respond makes all the difference. Be kind to yourself and show the same compassion you would to others.
